Spring Break

Last week the kids were on spring break! In this post, Ms. Kamelle shares some of the teen house’s adventures!

One of my favorite things about my job is that I get to go with our unaccompanied youth on outings and watch them engage in new experiences. Over spring break last week, we had activities that would get the teens out of the house and in touch with nature and themselves. We started the week with a trip to the Isle of Palms to spend the day on the beach with our toes in the sand and the sun on our faces. So often our teens come to us carrying loads of stress. They’ve worried about their safety, when they’ll eat, and where they’ll stay. Many times, they’ve carries this stress for month or years, preventing them from having typical childhood experiences. On the beach the teens were able to just be teens. I love being able to watch them let their guard down and the stress roll off their shoulders. There’s nothing quite like being surrounded by their laughter as they let it all go.

Throughout the week we explored the beauty of nature on our local trails. To end a great week, we packed a picnic and headed to Lake Murray. After lunch the teens feed the geese before breaking into a water gun fight. The conversations and interactions as a family on days that like are priceless!


Kamelle Frink is our Lead Direct Care Staff at the teen house, working with the teens in our Basic Center Program and the Unaccompanied Youth Program. Kamelle has a Bachelors in Liberal Arts and a Masters in Education with a concentration in Management. At our teen house, Kamelle wears many hats, she helps coordinate staff schedules, maintains documentation, and helps meet the daily needs of our teens. “Helping teens meet their goals is my passion,” Says Kamelle, “This job gives me the best of both worlds. I use my management skills with the direct care staff and my other strengths with the teens.” If Kamelle wasn’t helping the teens at Palmetto Place she would like to work with the Department of Education to implement programs for special needs students.
