Palmetto Place Receives $5,000 from Unum/Colonial Life Volunteer of the Year

Tim Sox of Lexington has been named the Unum Lending Hands Volunteer of the Year.

The award is given annually to one of Unum’s 10,000 employees in the United States and United Kingdom for excellence in volunteer activities in the community, positive outlook about volunteerism, inspiring co-workers and having a definite effect on the quality of life in the community. Sox is director of enrollment solutions for Colonial Life, a business unit of Unum Group. Colonial Life is headquartered in Columbia, one of Unum’s major home office locations.

“Volunteering is all about action,” Sox said. “You have to take a step forward. Once you start and you realize the difference small actions can make, it’s easy and it makes a big difference in people’s lives — including your own. Find something you’re interested in and I’ll guarantee you there is a place that could use your energy.”

This is the first time a Columbia employee has won the corporation’s award. Unum is donating $5,000 to a charity selected by Sox: Palmetto Place Children’s Shelter.

“Tim is the epitome of the servant leader,” said Linda Bambacus, vice president of service operations, who nominated Sox for the award. “People use that term all the time but they often don’t understand what it truly means. Watching Tim’s actions at work and in the community, you can see it’s through serving that he builds followership. That’s what makes him a great leader. He looks to help others, never for recognition.”

Sox’s volunteer activities include:

  • Serving as a mentor for troubled youth at the Carolina Boys Home
  • Volunteering 60 hours a month as the Scoutmaster for Troop 340
  • Playing Taps for military funerals as part of Bugles Across America
  • Leading a United Way Day of Action team
  • Serving on the Columbia campus United Way campaign core team
  • Organizing volunteer activities for Aspire alumni
  • Regularly donating blood to the American Red Cross
  • Chairing the technology committee at St. David Lutheran Church
