Sweet & Savory 2018 - A Success!

Sweet & Savory 2018 - A Success!

The Midlands’ top culinary masters and Columbia’s best foodies gathered on April 26 for Palmetto Place’s annual Sweet & Savory Chefs Competition and raised over $26,000.

The competition featured 10 chefs from across the state who brought their best dishes to the table. From savory southern dishes like Lamb Lollipops, to sweet treats like Chocolate Avocado Truffles, chefs and attendees enjoyed the growing food scene in Columbia while supporting abused and neglected youth and teens.

“We were so thrilled to see so many from our community come out to support the cause and enjoy great food,” said Jill Lawson, Executive Director for Palmetto Place. “We’ve created an event that garners community support for the increasing number of homeless, abused and neglected teens in the Midlands.”

This year’s competition included chefs Ben Perzan and Arie Shankar from the Mediterranean Tea Room, Brenda Perry and Yasmeen Bull from Southern Foodservice Management, Dave Grillo from Cantina 76 and Za’s Pizza, Robert Stegall-Smith from Performance Foodgroup Florence, Michael Giri from Embassy Suites, Lawrence Wright and Vinnie Livoti from BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina, Jason Bruner from 1801 Grille, and Charlie Young.

“Teen homeless is an epidemic in South Carolina and the Midlands is working diligently to combat the issue.” Says Lawson, “Palmetto Place collaborates with other community agencies to bridge services and secure resources for each individual’s needs. Providing a roof over their head and food in their stomachs won’t end the epidemic. It takes a village – a vast village that consists of agencies, community members and groups, and volunteers who share our passion for the mission that we serve.”

Sweet & Savory is just one of the many events throughout the year that Palmetto Place hosts to raise money and gain supporters. The organization works closely with community partners like United Way of the Midlands and BlueCross Blue Shield to promote its fundraising efforts.

Palmetto Place Celebrates March Madness

Palmetto Place Celebrates March Madness

Spring is finally here and the teens at Palmetto Place could not be more excited! It might be the promise that spring break is around the corner and warmer weather is on its way, it might be the fact that our local college teams are in the NCAA Playoffs. For those who love basketball, spring is not just the season that follows winter. For them, spring marks a start of the March Madness and offers another shot at predicting the perfect bracket; a task that has remained unaccomplished throughout the entire history of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. The excitement and buzz of March Madness bonds communities together behind their favorite teams. Every year, millions of Americans make predictions for all 67 games included in the season and fill in their brackets; all hoping they have created the first ever, perfect bracket. This year the University of South Carolina is part of the big dance and we’re hoping to cheer them on at the championship game on April 3rd! We’ll be celebrating the championship game at the Buffalo Wild Winds on Devine Street in Columbia and hope you’ll join us for an Eat Wings, Raise Funds event! Tell your server that you and your friends are celebrating with us and Buffalo Wild Wings will donate 10% of your meal to Palmetto Place. So, come out and see for yourself exactly how Palmetto Place celebrates March Madness. There’s not an easier way to support your championship pick AND the kids Palmetto Place than to enjoy Buffalo Wild Wings' legendary atmosphere and delicious gameday food! For more information regarding our celebration, visit our Facebook event.

About Palmetto Place

Palmetto Place has cared for more than 7,000 children and teens in the last 40 years. We are a safe haven for teens who find themselves living on the streets with no one to turn to and children who have been abused or neglected. We provide love and support and give our residents an opportunity for a brighter future. Despite the tragic stories, our home is filled with the laughter of new friendships. It's where teens learn to drive, get their first job, and go prom. It's where kids make the honor roll, play in the park and have the chance to just be a kid. Palmetto Place is home and family for many of the state's most vulnerable children and teens.

By attending Sweet & Savory, you're showing these kids the community they live in cares about them. You're showing them hope for a brighter future. Help us celebrate the last 40 years and 7,000 children and teens who called Palmetto Place home, and help us look forward to new possibilities and the next 7,000 children to call our house home.

Midlands Gives

Thank you for being a part of the Palmetto Place community! For the third time, we are participating in Midlands Gives!

Each year generous supporters like you join us for the exciting annual Midlands Gives event -this year it will be May 3 from 12:00:01am until 11:59:59pm. Your generous support makes a meaningful difference to abused, neglected and homeless children and teens in South Carolina.

As you know, Palmetto Place is changing lives every day by providing a safe haven to the state's most desperate children.

On May 3, 2016, Midlands Gives Day, your $50 donation could purchase clothing for a child who was taken into care with none of their personal belongings. Or, it could be used to pay graduation fees for the senior who never thought they would walk across that stage. Without you and your donation, we may not be able to offer the small things that make a childhood great, like trips to the movies with friends or a night of roller skating.

Here’s the really exciting part: Every gift made through MidlandsGives.org on May 3rd helps our chances of winning prizes given throughout the day ranging from $500 to $5,000! With more than $100,000 total prizes being awarded throughout the day, our chances to maximize your gift are great! Just imagine if we could send all of our residents to summer camp this year.

Make your gift on May 3rd by visiting the Midlands Gives site or visit our headquarters at Cantina 76 on Devine from 11-1!  With your help, we WILL reach our $8,000 fundraising goal on Midlands Gives!

Follow us on social media so you can share in the excitement of a day of giving and remember to give on May 3rd!
