"Star Light Star Bright"

Palmetto Place celebrated 30th Anniversary of providing care to children of the Midlands at a Gala Event June 2, 2007.  Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated with us!

The gala theme was "Star Light, Star Bright," because each child that comes to Palmetto Place is a special light...a star that shines brightly even in the face of abuse and neglect. Since 1977, over 6,000 stars have lit the sky at Palmetto Place.

The black tie optional event included a unique rocking chair silent auction. Fifty rocking chairs (child and adult sizes) were painted by local artists, art students and individuals. Included among these artists were local favorites Jim Harrison and Erica Hoyt.

Professional chefs representing the American Culinary Federation, Midlands Chapter, prepared the delicious dinner. And the piece de resistance - our annual dessert competition in which chefs competed for special honors, and guests were able to sample their culinary creations.

Palmetto Place recently lost two very dear friends.

Dr. Wayne "Matt" Matthey passed away November 14, 2006. Dr. Matthey was an integral member of the Board of Directors from the shelter's inception in 1977 until 1991. He served as President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary during his tenure.
Robert Beyerl passed away December 10, 2006. Bob served as Interim Executive Director of the shelter from 2000-2004, President of the Board of Directors 2004-2005, and Treasurer of the Board 2005-2006.
Both men made tremendous contributions to Palmetto Place and will be greatly missed by the Board of Directors and staff of the shelter!

Palmetto Place underwent a few
staff changes in January 2006:

After 10 years of service, Marion Atkins retired January 27, 2006, as Director of the shelter. She will be missed - but we know she'll be back as a volunteer!

Marisa Merchant, MSW, has been named Executive Director of the shelter by the Board of Directors. She previously served as the shelter's Children Services Coordinator.

Shaneka McDaniel-Oliver has been hired as the shelter's new Program Coordinator.

Beach Ball 2006 was a huge success. Marion received the Order of the Silver Crescent. See Pictures of the event.

The First Annual Travinia Open held in October 2005 was a huge success, raising more than $20,000 for the shelter. The next tournament date has already been set: October 17, 2006.
